TAC (Type Allocation Code)

The Type Allocation Code (TAC) consists of the first eight digits of an IMEI number and is issued by the GSMA to officially identify a specific manufacturer brand and device model.

Checking the TAC against the physical phone is the fastest programmatic method to catch counterfeit or modified devices. If illicit factories randomly generate an IMEI sequence or flash a stolen number into a baseband, the TAC will often point to a completely different model (like an obscure, discontinued feature phone) rather than the premium flagship the scammer is trying to sell.
